Once again, I am compiling a playlist of songs from television shows that have been in rotation during that past year. However, unlike previous playlists, this one also contains songs from commercials as well instead of segregating the two. Below is what I have so far:
Everybody Wants to Rule the World (Tears for Fears) - Kid Nation theme song
Come Anytime (Hoodoo Gurus) - Thank God You're Here theme song
I know, You Know (The Friendly Indians) - Psych theme song
Calling All Friends (Low Stars) - What About Brian? theme song
Hello Goodbye (The Beatles) - Target commerical
Blister in the Sun (Violent Femmes) - Burger King commercial
This is the Day (The Thes)- M&Ms commercial
It's a Jungle Out There (Randy Newman) - Monk theme song
Ice Cream ((New Young Pony Club)) - Intel commercial
Hockey Monkey (James Kochalka Superstar and the Zambonis) - The Loop theme song
God Only Knows(The Beach Boys)- Big Love theme song
We're Not Going To Take It (Twisted Sister) Yaz birth control commercial
Superman (R.E.M.) Toyota Sequoia commercial
The Part Where You Let Go (HEM) Liberty Mutual Insurance Company
Put A Little Love in Your Heart (Annie Lennox & Al Green/Jackie Desharm) Smart Balance fake butter commercial
I appreciate suggested additions.

Plagiarism is the Sincerest Form of Flattery - I'm looking at you Jazz Chill Corner
Jazz Chill Corner decided to repost my 2007 Music Festival listing w/o any type of attribution. You can compare them side by side - a his here and mine here and you'll see they're identical. He couldn't even be bothered to add a few new ones.
Not only does this probably violate my creative commons license, it's just rude not to give credit where it's due. It's called a footnote in academia (or a hat tip in the blogosphere). When I reposted E)'s stoner job search ad and commented on it, I gave her credit because that's appropriate.
While I'm flattered, it'a just not polite to acknowldege my hard work to compile that list (and solicit more info for future updates) or provide a link to the original source.

The Shamrock Festival is Going to Rock!
I love music and music festivals (no surprise to regular readers). The Shamrock Festival is going to ROCK! And let me tell you why.
In the past, the Shamrock and Octoberfest music festivals have been held in Ballston. They generally feature a mix of local talent and VERY popular cover bands such as Mr. Greengenes, Burnt Sienna, Kristen and the Noise, Laura Lea & Trip Fabulous. Love Seed Mama Jump usually plays too - they have an eclectic mix of their excellent original music plus covers. (You know - the typical Dewey Beach bands). Kelly Bell usually plays too and this year features Scott's New Band - a reworking or LRS.
This year is going to be better because it will be at RFK. This will minimize the crowding, but possibly make it bigger. It also is going to have major headliners and a lot of the favorites I mentioned above.
I hope that this eventually supplants the now-defunct HFStival.

Screw the Politics: Earth Aid is going to Rock! (and Al Gore will be President)
I will happily shell out the $500 for VIP tickets to Live Earth Aid. The line-up, though not finalized, threatens to outdo that of the 1998 Tibetan Freedom Concert in talent. That concert, in my humble opion, actually had a better lineup than any music festival since, and including, the original Woodstock.
And I really don't care about the politics of the concert, and neither should you. Really, who are you hurting by not seeing a kick ass concert line up? Yourself, that's who!
Plus, if you go the American Concert you're likely to witness Al Gore lay the foundation for (or further) his effort to become President. Potentially, he'll announce, and all the publicity surrounding the concent, plus the simulcasting of the event will allow Gore to build an enormouse following.
My previous theory was that the'll announce at the Oscars if he wins. Which he still may do, but doing so may complicate his efforts to pull off the concert (due to FEC regulations and campaign finance laws). And it's actually a smart strategy for him to drop hints at the Oscars and then use the run up publicity to the concert will raise his national profile. Additionally, the concert would be the greatest presidential announcement venue EVER!

Another Commercial Playist Update
Apparently, I'm not the only one to have this idea. Apple has released what it considers the top 50 songs used in commericals.
Commercial Soundtracks (Updated)
I also am mixing a CD composed entirely of songs that appear in television commercials. This gives quite a variety as older bands license songs to make money, while younger bands do it to get airplay and boost sales. A prime example of the latter is Dirty Vegas, whose license with Mitsubishi really paid off.
So far I have the following songs qued up to burn, and they're quite good so far. Just need a few more til I burn it.
1) Cherub Rock (Smashing Pumpkins) - Major League Baseball)
2) Days Go By (Dirty Vegas) - Mitsubishi
3) Lose Yourself (Eminem) - Apple iPod
4) Whip it (Devo) - Swiffer
5) Baby got Back (Sir Mix Alot) - Target Back to School
6) Pictures of You (The Cure) - HP
7) 100 Years (Five for Fighting) - JP Morgan
8) Do You Want My Way (The Who) - Monster
9) Just What I Needed (The Cars) - Circuit City
10) Jane Says (Jane's Addiction) - Jack Daniels
11) Supterstitious (Stevie Wonder) - Levi's
12) Under Pressure (Queen) - Zales
13) Take Me Out (Franz Ferdinand) - Sony PSP
14) Sweet Melissa (The Allman Brothers) - Cingular
15) The Boys are Back in Town (Thin Lizzy) - Wrangler Jeans
16) Dust in the Wind (Kansas) - Subaru B9 Tribeca
17) No Sleep Tonight (The Faders) - iTunes + Cingular
As always, suggestions and help on this topic are welcome.

Television Soundtracks (Updated)
I'm thinking of burning a CD that is composed only of opening songs from TV Shows, the only catch is the show has be on currently, and syndication only doesn't count. I know there are more good ones out there, but so far I have:
1) Baba O'Reilly (The Who) - CSI:MY
2) Won't Get Fooled Again (The Who) - CSI:Miami
3) Who Are You? (The Who)- CSI
4) Sunny Days (Long Beach Dub All-Stars) - Joey
5) We used to Be Friends (Dandy Warhols) - Veronica Mars
6) ??? (The Smiths) - Charmed
7) In the Street (Cheap Trick) - That 70s Show
8) A Perfect Lie (Engine Room) - Nip/Tuck
9) C’Mon, C’Mon (The Von Bondies) - Rescue Me
10) C'mon A-My House (Rosemary Clooney) - The Girls Next Door
11) Sweet Dreams (The Eurythmics) - The Apprentice
If you have any suggestions, please add them in the comment section.

The Beatles Rock!
40 years later they are still the best band in the world - they changed everything. They completely rock - and I use the present tense because recording media make them ever present.

My Soundtrack for the '90s
So I was sitting in bed this morning trying to come up with the ultimate soundtrack for the decade, which of course would accompany some John Waters movie set then. Songs had to popular enough that most people would recognize them, if not the artists. I started doing this in April of 2000 with a friend, and continued on and off for a while. Here's the best I've come up with so far.
1)Sell Out - Reel Big Fish
2)Bizarre Love Triangle - New Order
3)What's Up? - 4 Non-Blondes
4)Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger
5)End of the World as We Know it -- R.E.M.
6)All Shook Down - Paul Westerburg
7)Today - Smashing Pumpkins
8)Runaway Train - Soul Asylum
9)Stay - Lisa Loeb
10)Here Comes Your Man - Pixies
11)Positive Bleeding - Urge Overkill
12)Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
13)Give it Away Now - Red Hot Chili Peppers
14)Ch-Check it Out - Beastie Boys
15)Sex & Candy - Marcy Playground
16)Right Here, Right Now - EMF
17)Zoot Suit Riot - Cherry Poppin Daddies
18 Roll to Me -- Del Amitri

I'm Back (and I finally figured out the iPod)
Well, after seven months off, I'm back. In the future there should be more commentary on the articles I post here.
I also finally figured out how best to use my iPod - my friend EEE taught me. That way I didn't have to read the instructions.
Not Reading the Instructions
I love technology that is intuitive. This is one of the key reasons I love TiVo. It is truly intuitive, and much easier to use than the DVR that comes with your cable box.
It also brings me to one of my favorite themes: It's not just me, most Americans don't like to read instructions. It's true. When was the last time you actually read the instructions for anything that wasn't Ikea furniture? (and their products are definitely not intuitive to assemble)
It's also the prime reason Americans have been so upset over HMO policies - they were caught by surprise because they didn't bother reading the instructions that spelled out quite clearly what and who was and was not covered.

iPod Angst Redux
Well, I was overly optimistic. Seems that all I really did was access the library on my iPod separately from the library on the laptop. Not what I hoped for. Now it seems I have to find the Ipod CD-Rom in order to read up on how to transfer songs from the iPod to the laptop. Hopefully, I won't have too much trouble finding it since it's not where I thought I left it.
Hmm.
Hmm.
iPod Angst Resolved
Ok, things seems to be working out now. I had originally let the iPod run all the way down in the hope that this somehow would help with the langauge selection problem. However, that proved unnecessary to the fix I needed.
In any event, I hooked the iPod up to the laptop earlier today to (Successfully) resolve the language problem. I then let it run down again, and hooked it up to a different USB port. When it connected again, the laptop iTunes library now contained all of the songs downloaded from the desktop to iPod.
Not sure how that happened, but it's very cool nonetheless.

iPod Angst
Still haven't gotten my iPod to work properly (read: the way I think it should work). When I first set it up it displayed in one of the asian languages. Because I'm an American, I don't read instructions, and it took me forever to be bothered enough to check the troubleshooting guide. So that only took three months.
The other hassle is that I bought a new laptop at the same time I purchased the iPod. However, most of my music collection is on my old desktop. I hope(d) that I could download all of my music files from the desktop to the iPod, and from there to my laptop (on to which I had already burned a host of newer CDs). So far, I haven't figured out how to do that - the iTunes software recognizes the iPod as being hooked to the desktop, but only offers to delete everything on it and replace the extensive library from my desktop with the semi-empty library on the laptop.
